Emotions that you can't put into words are...?
Wani It's already DecemberRika The year just flew right by
Wani It's just about to be winter, so let's have a hot battle of "RikaWani Kouhaku Utagassen" ! What's this time's theme?
Rika "Songs with a long intro, takes a while to get to the lyrics" showdown!
Wani This is a crazy showdown (laughs) First up on Red Team is?
Rika Yuki Saori-san's "Yoake no Scat"
Wani The intro is completely scat1
Rika It is! There's really no other song like this one (laughs)
Wani Originally, it seemed to be a part of a radio jingle. It was so well received that it got a full song with lyrics..... But even so
Rika Yuki Saori-san's voice is clear, pleasant, and memorable. Once you hear that voice you'll never forget it.

Wani It's like a lullaby
Rika After the events of the song, I think the protagonist is thinking of doing a lovers' suicide.....
Wani Oh...!?
Rika I could be overthinking it, but the lyrics starting from the 2nd verse go "our clock comes to a stop" and such. This gives the impression of them not being able to see the next morning. Given the song's background being from 1969, I thought it wasn't all that outrageous
Wani In the scat part of the song, I wonder if they had any doubts leading up to that point
Rika I suppose it's an emotion that can't be put into words. Yuki Saori-san has a few other songs that include the theme of "love = the meaning of life" , so this interpretation sits well with me.
Wani Speaking of Terao Akira, he's got a strong image as an actor, and besides "Ruby no Yubiwa" he has many other songs that are considered to be hidden gems
Rika Actually, my favorite is "Nagisa no Campari Soda" but I chose "SHADOW CITY" as it's more characteristic of him

Wani Just like "Yoake no Scat" the intro is mostly humming.....
Rika When I first listened to it I was shocked!

Wani You were probably wondering when it would start, right?
Rika It didn't feel like it was starting at all, and there were soooo little lyrics (laughs). But then there's this feeling of grandeur to it that doesn't make you realize the lack of them.

Wani Definitely. "SHADOW CITY" which is part of the album "Reflections" , all the way up to the last song "Shukkou SASURAI" has a story behind it, and it's totally got a grand feeling.
Rika "Reflections" was recommended to me by a Hello! Staff member who also likes Showa era music, and I was so moved that I also bought the LP. I really love this album.

Wani So about "SHADOW CITY" , what about the humming part is it that you like?
Rika Basically I think that this is a breakup song. A man and a woman at the rooftop of a bar, looking over the city skyline, talking about breakups over drinks. The guy is a lot older. But there isn't any profound sadness, and it gives you more of a mature sense.
Wani Not the bravado kind?
Rika An adult's maturity and composure. They enjoy each other's love, which already seems to be immersed in memories.....
Wani Can you see the lingering emotions even with the lack of words?
Rika Accompanied by the sound of rain, you can hear something like "thank you for everything". And then the tone of Terao Akira-san's voice gives me more of an air of maturity. It's "SHADOW CITY" that can exist because of him.
Wani I'm really loving the talk..... but it's time to choose a winner!
Rika For sure White Team's "SHADOW CITY"

Wani This is favoritism for Terao-san huh (laughs)
Rika There's that too but (laughs), it's because it's a wonderful love song. Though Terao Akira-san and Yuki Saori-san are both really great actors and singers..... So in that sense, to choose between them is really hard. I want to become an artist like the two of them.
Wani While Rika-chan has also come up with a grand goal, I'm quite relieved to finally have a win for White Team.

1 ...in the case that you don't know. "Scat" refers to "scat music" rather than the other meaning of the word more commonly used elsewhere in the world

A word from the translator…
Sometimes I just don't get how she comes up with these things, and it's like wow, are you secretly a time traveler? She feels surreal
..but she's very real. And she's very right for saying that "Reflections" is a great album, because it is. Her favorite "Nagisa no Campari Soda" is, believably, a summer love song.
